“Let every heart prepare a throne and every voice a song”
The Christminster Singers are no strangers to Faringdon, and return to All Saints Church for EVERY VOICE A SONG, a concert for Advent, on Sunday November 24th at 4pm until around 5.30 including an interval during which there will be refreshments in the Barber Rooms.
The Christminsters are NOT your usual church choir! The 14-strong choir specialise in lively, powerful four part harmony “West Gallery” singing of carols and anthems which you might have heard in small country churches if you’d been around during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This was before the Victorian Church of England decreed that music in churches should be far more restrained, and this style of singing gradually disappeared. Fortunately many old manuscript books have come to light, some in Oxfordshire churches, and it has been revived in recent decades.
Led by Dave Townsend, a music historian, several of the Christminster Singers are also accomplished instrumentalists, and will be playing concertina, melodeon, fiddle, clarinet and other instruments at times during the concert – as they would have been in church bands of the time.
This concert has been arranged by Margaret Starr in aid of the WATSAN charity which provides fresh water and sanitation to communities in South West Uganda. Tickets are £10 and can be obtained from the Mustard Seed shop, online, directly from Margaret (tel: 01367 240201) or at the door. The entire ticket cost will go to the charity.
