Die Winterreise - Schubert

William Burn, a baritone who grew up in Faringdon, described singing Die Winterreise as “the most intense musical challenge a singer can take on, but also the most incredible privilege: just you, a piano, and 70 minutes of some of the greatest songs ever written.”

Hearing Franz Schubert’s Winterreise is a unique experience in music: accompanied only by a piano a solo singer sings 24 songs which plumb the most powerful human feelings of love, rejection, madness, hope and despair. The story is of a young lover, rejected by the girl he hoped to marry, stumbling through a frozen winter landscape, and in his music Schubert unforgettably presents the young man’s timeless emotions as he confronts his emotions and memories. Many of the songs have become famous in their own right, including the sublime ‘Lindenbaum’ and ‘Gute Nacht’, but it is only when the whole work is performed together that listeners can experience the extraordinary journey undertaken by the young man.
