Friendship is a word that we learn when we’re children, and continue to use for the rest of our lives. Familiarity can tempt us to remain at the surface of things, and can conceal the rich depths that we can feel but often don’t contemplate.
Starting with Aristotle’s explorations of friendship nearly two and a half thousand years ago, this talk will explore how something natural, significant, and cherished in our lives is transformed by grace. St Thomas Aquinas helps illuminate how God enters into, and transforms, human friendships, and Mary Magdalene provides a concrete, Scriptural example of how a friendship with Jesus transforms both our own lives as well as our friendships with others.
